2. New Book! Odd One In II - Invisible Travel
Travelling could be about ‘being present’; at times, it could have nothing to do with ‘being present’ – it could be an imaginary act for a beautiful, unseen place. On an ordinary day it could also become a wonderful part of our memory, taking us to somewhere far away … an afternoon … a section of the road … or a strip of cloud. Odd One In II: Invisible Travel is a collection of Pak’s art documentation about ‘getting lost’ in an unfamiliar place and ‘seeing from his inner eye’ during his traveling in Italy, New York, Korea, Tokyo, Malaysia and China.

A blank page is a pause of time in reading. It could also be readable, offering infinite imagination. A blank page is common in all books, giving us a vision of all. My residency in Asia Art Archive is to photocopy all the blank pages from its collection, attempting to create an alternative to the archive’s collection.

Breathing in a House
Korea (Busan), 1-10.09.2006 (10 Days)
Installation with Video
Size variable (Video length: 6 minutes)

I live in a small house, Breathing Until I use up all the air in the whole house.

Description:
One night I slept on my own bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking of nothing, but indistinctly heard my own breathing, and I suddenly asked myself, ‘How long does it take to breathe in all the air of this room?’. This is how this work was conceived. And then there came a chance to realize this idea at the Busan Biennial in Korea. I rented an apartment (6.7m x 2.7m x 2.2m, as small as an apartment in Hong Kong! ) in Busan. I lived in this small apartment as usual, but I collected the air I breathed with transparent plastic bags until the whole apartment was filled with these plastic bags with my own breathing. The whole process took 10 days. It felt like part of my life has sojourned at this apartment.

To contain the spread of SARS, property management companies place a plastic sheet on the combination lock at the entrance of buildings. They have it cleaned and changed on a regular basis. This is a used plastic sheet, bearing traces of residents' comings and goings. 3692 is the entry code for the building. (Amazingly, password was molded on the lock!) The box contains the plastic sheets of the other five blocks in the housing estate.

On July 2, I stood on the footbridge over Leighton Road, looking at the path trodden by the demonstrators. I took a photograph. Putting the photograph on the newspaper of that day accidentally extended the sight. (In the second year of “1st July demonstration” (2004) in Hong Kong, demonstrators drop from 500,000 to 100,000. Many participators became onlookers.)

A little flower arranged by five one-dollar coins

I arranged five one-dollar coins into the shape of a flower and placed them at the street corner. Then I drew it a twig and leaf and date (as a mark), waiting for those “in need” to pick them up.
