NEWS: 2012 CCAA Best Artist: Pak Sheung Chuen

Contemporary Chinese Art Awards (CCAA) 2012
Best Artist: Mr. Pak Sheung Chuen

Jury Statement:
Pak Sheung Chuen manages to produce works that, against all odds, are recognizable as art. Emphasizing its intimate relationship with daily life by engaging with everyday situations and common people, his art is almost invisible, almost impossible to document, but manages to explore the human condition in all its complexities and with loving precision.

Born in 1977, Fujian, educated and living in Hong Kong, Pak works with installations, photo, painting, video and perhaps fore mostly actions—continuing and expanding a conceptual tradition with both Western and Asian roots. As an artist who has matured in terms of methodology, he focuses on the realities of everyday life, revealing the uniqueness that enables the exploration of its uncharted potentialities. Consequently, these potentialities of everyday life, suppressed by the grand narratives of modernity, become the center of artistic expression and assume new meanings. Viewed under this light, Pak works from a state of suspension and ambiguity that subtly subverts the balance of power between different systems. Rich in the articulation of ambiguities, Pak's work is not for the market, not for the media, but for everyone who cares about discovery. I hereby congratulate Mr. Pak for winning the 2012 CCAA Best Artist Award.

NEWS: Frieze London 2012 stand prize

The Frieze London 2012 stand prize has been awarded to Vitamin Creative Space, “Pak Sheung Chuen: Left & Right, Blue & Sky”, stand E6.
http://friezelondon.com/news/winner-announced

Art Review:
Pak Sheung Chuen at Beijing’s Vitamin Creative Space work was simultaneously beautiful and comic: on a plinth were two grids of halved peanuts, neatly organised into rows – one containing all the right halves, the other all the left – positioned so that each half corresponded to its other. Other works by the artist included a largescale photograph of a magnified night sky, with all the constellations of light covered over with black paint. It was a neat hang, in a very small space, rightly awarded the Best in Show gong by the fair organisers. (By Oliver Basciano & Laura McLean-Ferris)

A Travel without Visual Experience (#2)
Malaysia, 7.10.2008-11.10.2008, (5-days/4-nights tour)
Pak Sheung Chuen

Concept:
I joined a 5-day/4-nights tour group to Malaysia, a country that I had never been before. From Hong Kong to Malaysia then back to Hong Kong, I either closed or covered up my eyes (in order to pretend that I was blind) for the entire journey. During the trip, I was still doing all the sightseeing and took many photos, but instead of seeing, I only used my body to sense and experience my surroundings. These photographs enabled my “future” eyes to view the documented foreign landscapes at a later stage. My images, along with photography and videos from other members of the tour group, became the sole reference of my indirect memories and visual experience for Malaysia. I will never step foot into Malaysia again.

(#2) A Travel without Visual Experience is totally included 19 rolls of photographs, in 4 groups. These 5 rolls (#2) are Tate Collection, presented by Richard Chang 2010.

2. New Book! Odd One In II - Invisible Travel Travelling could be about ‘being present’; at times, it could have nothing to do with ‘being present’ – it could be an imaginary act for a beautiful, unseen place. On an ordinary day it could also become a wonderful part of our memory, taking us to somewhere far away … an afternoon … a section of the road … or a strip of cloud. Odd One In II: Invisible Travel is a collection of Pak’s art documentation about ‘getting lost’ in an unfamiliar place and ‘seeing from his inner eye’ during his traveling in Italy, New York, Korea, Tokyo, Malaysia and China.

A blank page is a pause of time in reading. It could also be readable, offering infinite imagination. A blank page is common in all books, giving us a vision of all. My residency in Asia Art Archive is to photocopy all the blank pages from its collection, attempting to create an alternative to the archive’s collection.

PAK's Art and Bio

Pak Sheung Chuen
Born in 1977 in Fujian, lives and works in Hong Kong

Introduction of Pak's artwork:
Pak Sheung Chuen’s playful work slyly alters the experience of everyday life. He explores, on the one hand, the mental and social “space” between everything that is structured, routine, and stable in our world, and on the other, he investigates coincidence, chance encounters, the arbitrary, and the imaginative. In so doing, he reveals artistic moments in everyday life and brings to the fore the interwoven nature of reality and the imaginary. He prefers to use himself and his writings as a medium, conceiving his works as actions or subtle manipulations of the regular course of events. In most cases these performative actions have no audience; rather, they consist of journeys and self-experiments that engage with ever-changing environments.

In an earlier work called “Waiting for a Friend (without Appointment)”, Pak went to the Kowloon Tong MTR station waiting area and waited until someone he knew walked out. He has also created a large permanent installation in the New York Public Library. In this project, the artist folded page twenty-two of every second book in the library. Another work consisted of a five-day trip to Malaysia, during which he kept his eyes closed the whole time; he took pictures so he could discover the country after he returned home. A similar project in Tokyo called “Valley’s Trip” (2007), for which the artist travelled from southern to northern Tokyo by walking only in the areas corresponding to the middle folds of his map. For his project “Going Home” for the Taipei Biennial 2010, Pak looked for people in the museum lobby who would allow him to accompany them to their homes.
